From the Ashes

Recreating a home in Warm Springs

On Saturday, Sept. 3, 2022, the Limelight condominium complex on Warm Springs Road in Ketchum was filled with a mix of part- and full-time residents enjoying a summer evening over the Labor Day weekend. When a propane grill reportedly caught fire, the two-story complex was rapidly consumed with flames, destroying 26 units. Remarkably, no one was injured.

Then began the long process of insurance investigations, zoning debates, and rebuilding. Hollis Partners Architects of Ketchum designed a new complex, while Conrad Brothers Construction took on the role of general contractor for the project. With a new structure in place, the individual owners of the 26 condos went about recreating their homes with the help of interior designers. Sarah Latham and her team at L Interiors took on one such rebuild, naming it Nordic Haus.

Sophia Deming, studio manager at L Interiors, explained that the owners of what would become Nordic Haus wanted to create a personal ski condo with a European aesthetic, blending Bavarian and Mountain West styles. To achieve the look, the team used warm, neutral, and organic colors for the hard finishes and trickled in plaids and playful colors with the rugs, furniture and draperies. A herringbone wood floor and decorative lighting added a sophisticated finish to the unit.

Sarah Latham, principal designer at L Interiors, described her experience with the Nordic Haus project this way: “After meeting the client and hearing their story, I felt deeply committed to helping recreate not simply the home they had lost, but the feeling of it. They described walking through the front door of their former condo as feeling ‘like a hug,’ and that became such a meaningful part of our design direction. Having come very close to losing my own home to wildfire this past summer, I understood in a very personal way the emotional toll that kind of loss can take. Knowing that, through design, we could help bring back that sense of warmth, comfort, and home for their family was incredibly meaningful and truly an honor.”
