Blackburn Ranch in Carey, Idaho
Blackburn Ranch in Carey, Idaho
Bull-riding, river-dunking, and rattlesnake-wrangling, you say? Only at the wedding of locals Rudi Broschofsky and Cara Shumate. The "Bromate" romance first sparked on the halfpipe of Bald Mountain, became official on top of Curlys Loop, and was celebrated on the grassy plains near Carey, Idaho. The DIY touches ranged from the invites and stationary down to the beer bar and pie table, giving it a one-of-a-kind, very Rudi-and-Cara, rustic Idaho touch. Read Sun Valley Magazine's Q&A with the bride and groom below.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE SUN VALLEY?
Because we met there, we were living there and it’s a beautiful destination for friends and family who weren’t living there already.
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
Rudi is from Sun Valley, ID and Cara is from Santa Cruz, CA.
OCCUPATIONS?
Rudi is the Gallery Director at his family gallery, Broschofsky Galleries, and Cara is a graphic designer for Smith Optics.
HOW DID YOU MEET?
We met snowboarding, back when the halfpipe was on Baldy.
HOW DID YOU GET ENGAGED?
On top of Curlys on a September mountain bike ride. We stopped at the top for a break, and Rudi popped the question. He had gone up the day before and stashed a champagne picnic, rose petals, photos of the two of us and a camera inside Sun Valley Trekking’s Taurnac hut to document the whole thing.
NUMBER OF GUESTS?
200ish
WHAT WAS YOUR WEDDING THEME?
Rustic ranch meets hillbilly.
ANY SPECIAL TRADITIONS?
We said our marital vows in the Catholic Church the day before in front of our families, which was important to Cara. We rode a mechanical bull together at the reception which was important to Rudi.
SONG THAT YOU WALKED DOWN THE AISLE TO?
"Crystallize" by Lindsey Sterling
SONG FOR YOUR FIRST DANCE?
"Wherever Is Your Heart I Call Home" by Brandi Carlile
HOW DID THE NIGHT END?
With a bang. Literally… Haha. I mean we had a fireworks display that miraculously didn’t burn down the ranch.
WHERE WAS YOUR HONEYMOON?
Honeymoon? Who needs a honeymoon when you get to break down your own wedding and pack up your house and move to Portland all within three days? In all seriousness, we plan on cashing in on this in November on a trip to Nicaragua…. with 12 other people.
WHAT MADE YOUR WEDDING SO SPECIAL?
Family + Friends. Our families were a huge help with all the set up and planning and so many traveled from the East Coast. The mechanical bull was a huge hit for the kids and our crazy friends.
WHAT WAS THE BRIDE’S FAVORITE MOMENT?
Speeches were pretty awesome + dancing.
THE GROOM’S?
Having all his friends in one place and the river-seshing that happened the following day.
D.I.Y PROJECTS? GUEST FAVORS?
With the help of friends and family, we did everything DIY. From all the stationary and the beer bar, to the pie table, the flowers, all the signage, the guest book, the alter and the wooden candle centerpieces that were branded with our “B” brand.
