The Ketchum-Sun Valley area has a fabled history, full of skiers and snow, movie stars and athletes, fly-fishing and the ever-important, Hemingway. Ernest Hemingway first visited the area in 1939 and continued to return for 25 years, ultimately making Sun Valley his home and final resting place.
Now, and for the past seven years, in order to honor the literary history and life of Hemingway and his dearly loved home of Ketchum, the Community Library is hosting their seventh annual Ernest Hemingway Symposium, a celebration and lecture series paying tribute to the famed writer.
This year’s theme is Hemingway and Women, highlighting how Ernest Hemingway’s life and writing were influenced by the women in his life and how his depiction of women continues to influence writers and readers fifty years after his death. From October 19th to October 22nd, eight dynamic speakers will address the topic.
Frederic Hunter, acclaimed author of The Hemingway Play will deliver the keynote talk on Thursday, October 20th. Along with Hunter there will be readings, discussions, movie screenings, and book signings with Allie Baker, independent scholar and blogger of the Hemingway Project, and distinguished faculty members at Boise State University: Clyde Moneyhun, Mitch Wieland, Brady Udall, Stacey Guill, Clay Morgan, and Jacky O’Connor. Also at the symposium, Ketchum local Jim Jaquet will lead a Hemingway Haunts Tour.
The Community Library hosts this event with support from the Idaho Humanities Council, the creative talents of BSU Director of Initiatives Clay Morgan, and funding from various departments at Boise State University. This free symposium is intended to celebrate the literary heritage of Ernest Hemingway, and what better place to honor him than in his beloved town of Ketchum.
All events are free and open to the public. More details and a schedule of events are available at www.thecommunitylibrary.org/hemingway.
