Mother's Day Ideas

No doubt about it—every day should be Mother’s Day. Because, really, all mothers are working mothers. So why limit it to just one Sunday in May?

I say: Don’t limit it. Start early and celebrate the entire weekend. What mom wouldn’t love the effort? I know I would.

But I am of course, a mother, so that advice is not entirely unbiased. My only other advice is that whatever indulgent, decadent or extravagant efforts (hint, hint) you may have planned are also balanced with a little family togetherness (hopefully stress free and without the production of either dirty laundry or dirty dishes), so that mom can enjoy the reason she became a mom in the first place.

1) Pamper Her

Book a one-hour massage up at Sun Valley Resort. Nothing beats a soak in the Sun Valley Lodge outdoor pool pre or post massage. Top it off with the always tantalizing and delightful Sunday Brunch at the elegant LDR—think omelets and crepes made to order, seafood, fresh fruits and pastries, gourmet salads and a lavish display of desserts. Doors open at 9 a.m. and they don’t take reservations, so get there early and grab a mimosa on the terrace or in the Sun Room if there is a wait (serving until 2 p.m.).

Zenergy also offers spa treatments ranging from massage and facials to wraps, acupuncture and reiki. And any Zenergy gift gift card purchase of any 55-minute massage includes 30 minutes free (through May 31), goof for spa treatments, personal training, pilates and more.

2) Plan a Hike & Brunch

Afraid to take your chances as a walk-in at the Sun Valley Lodge Brunch? Then book a table at Cristina’s Restaurant & Bakery for Mothers Day Brunch this Sunday. It starts at 9 a.m. and runs as late as 4 p.m., so you have time for a hike or walk late morning (or to book mom a massage before a late brunch) before indulging in Cristina’s hand-crafted Italian delicacies and mouthwatering dishes. Phone only at 208.726.4499.

Rasberrys is also offering a fantastic Mother’s Day Brunch at their Hailey location (315 South Main Street) from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with all the fun and great food you have come to expect from the Rasberrys girls.

3) Bike and Lunch at the Sun Valley Club

The views are spectacular from the Sun Valley Club river rock dining room and the wrap-around terraces overlooking the 18-hole Sawtooths Putting Course and Trail Creek Golf Course are perfect for sipping Bloody Marys outside when the weather is nice. And it is a short bike ride (or walk) from the lodge—with the Ernest Hemingway Memorial is just a short pedal along Trail Creek Road.

4) Try Some Retail Therapy

Courtesy Holli JewelersAs Carrie of “Sex and the City” proudly proclaimed, “I always like my money right where I can see it: hanging in my closet.” If mom is a member of this camp, then give her a full day of indulgence. Grab some gift certificates from her favorite stores—or introduce her to some new ones. Lead her along with gift cards from the Shops at the Colonnade in Ketchum, where she can grab a latte at Tully’s then stroll along to find housewares at Elizabeth Lucas Home (everything is 50% to 70% off this weekend), fashions from emerging designers at Farasha Boutique or unqiue and stunning baubles at Holli Jewelers.

Courtesy Webb LandscapingOr hit the Galleria on Leadville Avenue ahead of time and grab mom a quiver of gift certificates from stores like Ketchum Bed & Bath (everything for above, and below, the sheets—including bedding, gifts, lingerie and housewares), Lululemon for workout gear, Sun Valley Eyeworks for designer shades, Bellissimo for unique gifts, table top and housewares, or Jensen Stern Joaillier for unique jewelry and watches. She can cap it off with a delicious French pastry handmade by Nancy from Rolling In Dough while browsing the gallery walls of Frederick Boloix Fine Arts for 20th century masters and contemporary art.

Other stops would include Burnsies Boutique, which is offering Fathers and Daughters 15% off any purchase for mom—shorts, shoes, shirts, dresses. And if you are looking for additional ideas, check out our weekly SWAG blog for the latest local deals, steals and cool finds.

5) Start a Garden

If mom has a green thumb—or is inspired to get one with the recent 70-degree days—head to Webb Living Stores (Bellevue, Hailey and Ketchum) for their Mother’s Day Sale this week. It ends on Sunday, but features everything from orchids and flowers to tomatoes and garden accessories at discounted prices, in honor of moms everywhere.

6) Take a Picnic and Go Birding

Do something different. Head to Hailey to meet at the Wood River Land Trust office for a morning of birding with local birding expert Larry Barnes, along with other local birders. It runs from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. this Sunday and will follow the land Trust’s newest conservation easement property with pristine bird habitat along Camas Creek and Kelly Reservoir. Meet at the Land Trust office at 119 East Bullion Street, Hailey. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy it with mom after the outing within the Camas Prairie near Fairfifeld.

7) Enjoy the Ballet

Courtesy Footlight DanceTake mom to the Ballet and experience “Fairyoplis,” the spring production by Footlight Dance Centre. Running Friday and Saturday night at 7 p.m., with a matinee at 2 p.m. the production includes ballet, modern dance, jazz, hip hop and tap dance staged at the newly renovated Wood River High School Performing Arts Theater on the Community Campus in Hailey.

And enjoy dinner before or after the show—lots of local restaurants are running slack specials, so there are plenty of options to suit everybody’s taste.

8) Take Mom to Dinner

Because Globus Restaurant and Wine Bar is celebrating a 20-year Anniversary, all entrées are $14.92 or less. You can also receive 20% off bottled wine with the purchase of an appetizer—and who doesn’t love the small plates like ginger cured yellowtail tuna or Niman ranch pork dumplings.

Courtesy GlobusCK’s Real Food is running an “Eat for Cash” special that guarantees diners either $25, $50 or $100 in CK’s Cash when they come in tofr dinner with a guest. And they are open for Mother’s Day dinner.

Ketchum Grill is celebrating their 21st year in business, so celebrate with them and bring mom (and the whole family) along. 21 specially chosen wines are only $21 per bottle and all entrées are priced at $16.21 or less.

Dashi is featuring a 3 Course Prix Fixe Menu for $25 or 20% off bottled wine with purchase of Prix Fixe or a regular entrée.

9) Go For the Bubbly

Cornerstone Bar and Grill is also celebrating moms with Free bubbly on Sunday and half-price apps, along with daily specials.

10) Give Her the Works—and enjoy it too!

Courtesy Chic NailChic Nail Boutique and Beauty Bar is offering a head-to-toe Mother’s Day Special for mothers and daughters. For $50 mother and daughter enjoy a mini manicure, a hairdo, a make up session and a photo shoot by local photographer Christine Olsen Photography [http://www.christineolsenphotography.com/]. And, of course, you get to enjoy champagne and refreshments like cake pops and lemonade.

So spoil mom this year in all the ways she deserves and remember that, “A mother is not a person to lean upon, but a person to make leaning unnecessary” (Ann Taylor).
