The Long Way Home

Idaho Highway Stories Vol. 2

Idaho is just another outlined territory in a nation connected by roads. Across the miles and mountains outside our perspectives, along these same roads, are the places many Americans live. Set in the high deserts of Southern, Central and Eastern Idaho, “Idaho Highway Stories” is a three-part photo essay documenting life along U.S. Routes 93, 75 and 20.

“Idaho Highway Stories” is not about the physical exploration of the Idaho landscape, but the lifestyles and emotions that define it. Focusing on the intricate moments of daily life, these photographs provide an intimate look at the compelling characters and activities in the backyards of this unusual part of America.

Ralph – Ralph Town fishes for trout on the Big Wood River below Magic Dam, just off Highway 75 north of Shoshone. Ralph, an Idaho native, lives in Dietrich and has been fishing the Big Wood since he was a boy.

Hook‘Em – Picabo Livestock Company ranch-hands stack hay on the KK Ranch near Picabo.

Opening Day – Campers gather on the banks of Silver Creek near Highway 20 to mark the opening day of the general fishing season in Idaho.

Sleep – Forrest Roberson takes a rest with his son Skylar before competing in the calf roping event at the Lincoln County Fair and Rodeo in Shoshone.

Hot Springs – Jay Young floats in the Challis Hot Springs just south of Challis. Located on the banks of the Salmon River, the natural springs are a destination for swimming and camping off Highway 93.
