A Day at Silver Creek

A Day at Silver Creek

The sun rises early and casts its long rays onto the Nature Conservancy’s Silver Creek Preserve, and as the colors fade with the growing light, the wildlife wakes like a horse at a race. Deer rise from their beds, moose trudge through the creek and birds are in constant motion. The world is alive and full of energy, and it’s palpable. Though most of the members of my family are not scientifically oriented people, this year marked the second in a row that we have driven down to Silver Creek to wake up with the wildlife, to bird and fill a "tweener" day (a cold, overcast, what-should-we-do-type day "in between" winter and summer) with an activity different than what we are used to. On our first trip down to the Preserve, we didn’t think of...

Donuts, Anyone?

Donuts, Anyone?

Is there anyone, child or adult, who can resist the aroma, texture and sweetness of a warm and freshly baked donut? I dare say not. After another trying trip through the grocery store in which my toddler insisted (loudly) that he was in absolute dire need of a donut from the bakery case, I decided to delve into the world of cooking blogs in search of a healthy and deceptively delicious donut recipe. The recipe that I found and subsequently prepared has without a doubt solved the sugar conundrum caused by my donut-obsessed toddler (and husband for that matter). The donuts in question are perfect for moms who are trying to sneakily add fruits and vegetables into their children’s diets without hearing as much as a quibble about the microscopic green speck on their plate....

Tips for Staying Healthy Over the Holidays

The holidays are here and it’s certainly time to eat, drink and be merry.  But for those of us “transplants” who call the Valley home, the holidays are also a time for crowds, airport chaos and wait for it—the dreaded holiday cold!  There are a few things that you can do mitigate the risks of acquiring this beast of a cold, things that won’t interrupt your holiday festivities and will keep you healthy during this festive time of year. The Power of Preparation: It’s always important, but getting an adequate amount of your “Vitamin Zs” is paramount to avoiding a cold. Studies have shown that getting at least 7 hours of sleep a night can help to ward off sickness because of sleep’s immune boosting properties. So...

Becoming Mrs. Santa Claus

Becoming Mrs. Santa Claus

Christmas Eve, the loneliest and longest night of the year for me.  He’ll stay out all night again. My friends warned me, but I didn’t listen. They still can’t believe I married someone I met at the mall, hardly knew and moved to the far north with him. His family calls it “tradition.”  It’s quite different from my family’s Christmas traditions. Tonight, my married children and grandchildren will attend a Christmas Eve candle-lighting service with their families at their home church in Idaho.  Afterward, they’ll go home for gift opening with punch and cookies. Tomorrow they’ll over indulge on a big family dinner. Year after year they follow these same family traditions, which I taught them.  I glance...

A Community Student’s Casserole-Lined Road to the White House

Elena Guylay, a 6th grader at The Community School, knows first-hand what it feels like to attend a “State Dinner” with the First Lady at the White House. Elena was chosen as the Idaho winner of Mrs. Obama’s Healthy Lunchtime Challenge for her recipe, “Fiesta Casserole.” The contest challenged kids from around the country to come up with a healthy lunchtime recipe that incorporated all the food groups and was, of course, delicious.  The Healthy Lunchtime Challenge partnered with Epicurious, and if you’re in need of some yummy and kid-friendly recipes you can download the entire cookbook of winning recipes online for free at recipechallenge.epicurious.com. Elena Guylay was one of just 54 winners of a contest which received more than 1,200...

Back to School Gear

Back to School Gear

Summer is over and school is now in full tilt, so being prepared with the right school gear can make the transition from warm summer months to the cool autumn days easier and more fun for all of those involved.  There are great buys around town that will keep you shopping locally and get your little one ready for the new school year in style! I was in desperate search of a backpack for a two and a half-year-old the day before school started. Yes, he doesn’t really need a backpack at this age, but I wanted to get him started with the appropriate school-related accoutrements so that he could feel like a proper big boy. Finding a backpack for a child that small is no easy task, but I happened to find a great option at Sturtevants in Ketchum.  It is a North Face...

Cooking with Kiddos: Banana Bread

Cooking with Kiddos: Banana Bread

One of my favorite weekend activities involves spending quality time with my toddler in the kitchen, whipping up all kinds of fun and kid-friendly recipes. Cooking with your kids is a great way to get them interested in eating healthy and summer is a perfect time to try some light and yummy recipes with your little ones. A staple in our house is banana bread, which is an especially fun recipe to make with kids because it there are so many variations to this delicious treat. We typically make banana bread on Saturday mornings in our house and the scene usually involves a toddler in his jammies on a step stool furiously stirring batter with his “special spatula” in a flour-speckled kitchen. I make sure to go through each step and explain the ingredients so that he has...

A Few Tips for Flying with Toddlers

A Few Tips for Flying with Toddlers

The very idea of being in an enclosed space, where your child must sit quietly for hours on end and remain well behaved, is frightening to any parent of a toddler. Add to that the notion that the child will most likely skip his daily nap, that the plane's take-off and landing might be painful to little ears and that the child will be toted around by a stressed-out mother trying desperately to haul all of the appropriate travel baby gear while not missing connecting flights.   Sound like fun?  It's no wonder that most parents have serious anxiety about traveling with toddlers and are usually less than thrilled about the idea of getting on a plane with their little ones.  I recently traveled from Sun Valley to Philadelphia with our 2-year-old and...
